May 2023 happened to be a very eventful month, as the curtains draw on the 5th month of the year, our reporter looks back at one of the events that made the month thick and interesting. That is definitely Usoro Abakpa; a maize festival in the city of Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State.
Usoro Abakpa (Maize Festival) is put together annually for 5 years by a retired Akwa Ibom born teacher, broadcaster, musician and farmer,Mrs Nwedobong Ubeng. During her media tour to promote the event, she continually reemphasized the need to pass on Akwa Ibom culture and heritage to the younger generation through cooking and showcase of native delicacies.
The 6th edition of Usoro Abakpa took place at the Council for Arts & Culture, Abak road on May 17th and witnessed a huge turnout of persons from all demographics.
The traditional rulers, civil servants and even students, who took part in a cooking and arts competition added colour to the event this year.
